"I have a body of a 12 year old and a voice that matches. And, being as petite as I am, the most difficult part of it is being told that I am not 'pretty' because I am left wanting...namely in the areas of long, slenderl egs and a long, slender waist. I want to be beautiful (all women do), but thehardest part is being told that you would be 'beautiful' but only if you were a bit taller. How many times has my mother told me that if I just drank milk, I would be called 'beautiful'? But all in all, I cannot find solace in such external things. No make-up, slammin' dress or 4-inch high heels can make me what I'm not. Those things are not what make the beautiful beautiful. And with that, I leave with a quote by one of the world's most brilliant of beauties: For beautful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone. (Audrey Hepburn)"

- Melissa, 4'9"

"Most of the short people I met are nice, smily, friendly people. Short girls are attractive for tall men.
I think that even if we all -shorties-would like to be taller, we have to find the way to look fresh, sexy, feminine, stylish, classy. We can be really attractive. I love fashion, design, beauty issues. I am too short to be a model. But I can tell that many men call me ´beautiful´or something like that. I am really short, but well proportioned and, the most important: I take care of myself a lot, physically and spiritually."

- Loli, 4'9"

"I'm from the UK and I would be lucky if I could just walk into a shop and pick up something that fits! But it doesn't... I'm 18..and wish I was at least 5'7"...oh well I get called sweet, cute, aaaahh, and stuff...I hate it..those words need to be deleted from the dictionary.. does anyone know any high street shops that could cater to us?"

-Laura, 4'11"

"Always looked at as a "little girl" or "cute", never an attractive or heaven forbid, sexy woman."

-Stephanie, 5'2"

"I just answered the poll on whether or not I think the fashion industry ignores shorter women and why. I chose 'other'. I do believe we are ignored, and I think a major factor is because the fashion industry promotes the 'ideal body'. Being shorter than average is not part of the formula. When was the last time you saw a petite woman in an H & M ad? When was the last time you saw a petite entertainment show host? When was the last time you saw a petite cheerleader? In such things that focus on physical appearance and a skewed perception of beauty, we are discriminated against just like any other body type that is not considered the 'ideal'."

-Jenelle (no height)

*Cynthia's note* Isn't Kylie Minogue an H&M girl??

"I am 25 years old and my brother is 16. He is around 5'7. We have been asked several times if we are twins. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone told me I'd love being mistaken for being younger once I hit 30. The worst though is finding shoes. My feet are a size 4 womens, which there are not a lot of. So basically I am relegated to kids shoes a lot of the time. (Size 2 girls)Since I am a teacher, there are several times Ive shown up to school and recognized my shoes on the feet of a first grader."

-Anonymous female, 4'9"

"Although I would rather be 5'0 and a size 0, I'm not delicate- rather very strong for my size. :)"

- Vicki, 5'1"

"I am 15, female and Australian. I'm 165ish cm. LOL we all know what that means yea I am hovering between 164 and 165 and I don't like to tell myself I'm 164, cos 5 is a nice number. As for me I am genrally an ok height but I don't get the respect I want. Short history of short me-urm, my folks are pretty short but not that short. My mum is 157cm (5'2") and dad is 170 cm (5'7" or so). Yea he's real short. So and I have an older sis who is 27, she's 167cm (5'5 1/2 or so). My bro is 174cm (5'8" or so). But i at this age am so unconfident.I cry alot over my height and sometimes i think i am amzed at how growing two inches would make me like insanely happy. So as of right now I am trying to learn to deal with being 165 and hopefully I'll be able to accept myself cos i feel that i hate who i am now cos of the fact that I am short. So yeap. Anyways kudos to all of you people who set up sites like these. They really do help. :) "

- Ritz, 165 cm (5'5" or there abouts)

"I wish more common retailers would carry shoe sizes in a size 5 and a 5 1/2 so that I would not have to pay so much damn money for a shoe my size at a fine department store!!! My size is never available or on sale!!!!!"

-Shari, 4'11"

"My height seems to be major concern for everyone accept me, growing up in a house full of those of around 6 foot has not been easy, but it’s never really bothered me, though my mother sees it as a major issue. There is no explanation to why I’m this height but with the shortest of my siblings being 5”9 something clearly went wrong. Obviously I do get discriminated against like all of those not of average height but I quite like the all the attention attributed to being my height, in fact in my school a mini-documentary was made about myself and my best friend Steffie (6”2), though in truth there wasn’t many qualities shown about being short. But the worst part is even the clothes in the petite range don't fit me."

- Nell, 5'0"

"Thanks so much for the site! You know after I turned 30 it no longer bothered me that I am constantly mistaken for being so much younger. My friends from college now spend thousands of dollars a year to look younger and are envious -- I mean really envious -- of me. I spend nothing on botox or any of that. Ladies: wear your sunscreen, do yoga, eat as best you can and be kind to others. A decade from now you'll be sitting very pretty. :)

Plus I saw Penelope Cruz in person not that long ago and she's my height and age. :)"

-Claudia, 5'4"

"I love being short apart from when I want to buy a nice pair of jeans. All other clothing is fine so the jeans/trouser thing is a real bug-bear and I find the cut of some petite sizes not very flattering. Being pear-shaped, I have to be careful!!! But hail to being a great thing in a small package!!!"

-Feya, 4'11"

"I look if I was 15 years old. My facial structure and body are delicate. People are sweet beacuse I look younger. I feel I don't have the professional respect that I deserve for my age, but it's fine , when they know me, they love me."

-Marisabel, 5'1"

"I had just started college and decided to go shopping with my older sister. There was this really cute guy inside the store. He rang up our stuff and then looked at me and asked, "\'So, have you decided which high school you want to go to yet?' I was 18 and 2 days old. And he thought I was 13 or younger. And sometimes, in high school, I would have freshman ask me if I am touring the school to decide if I wanted to come to that one. I was a senior. "

-Alicia, 4'10 1/2"

"Well, I was mistaken for a kindergartener when I was in fifth grade, and was quite indignant and hurt even then. That's the story, in a nutshell..."

-Lauren, 5'0"

"Yes, I get misteaken for a younger age alot. I just think of it as a game like who can guess the closest to my real ago (18) or who guesses the farthest away. It's entertaining for me. and I usually get the age 14 a lot lol."

- Jessica Ashleigh, 5'2"

"When I was thirteen, people thought I was eight. Now I'm nineteen and people think I'm twelve. At least I've made progress."

-Alyssa, 5'1 5/8"

"I hate it when younger people think they can be disrespectful just because we're short...I once had a 9-year-old tell me he didn't think he had to listen to me because he was almost as big as I am. :/"

-Xia, 5'0"

"On Black Friday my family and I decided to go out shopping at a huge mall. While shopping I decided to stop at H&M. I was looking around (with my 5'5 friend) and I noticed, once again, that everything was either too big or too long. So i went to the cashier and asked for a suggestion as to wear I should be looking for some petite sizes. He leaned over the counter a bit to examine my height I guess. Then he looked at me, smiled and pointed behind me. I turned around and low and behold, it was the kids section. I turned back and looked up at him. 'That's the kids section,' I informed him. 'Wait how tall are you?'
'5'1 and a half'
'Yeah I was right. Kids section'
I twitched a bit and walked over to the kids section. Turns out I found a lot of really cute stuff that actually fitted. Worst part is he smiled the whole time he rang me up."

-Sharon, 5'1"

"I'm a size 0 to 2 petite, and if it weren't for Talbots & Ann Taylor I would have nothing appropriate & stylish to wear. Finding sleepwear, undergarments, bathing suits and narrow sized shoes to fit is a big problem (I wear a size 8 but have a narrow foot). The department stores need to wise up. Just because we are petite doesn't mean we aren't stylish and attractive. Lord & Taylor and Macy's are doing a much better job with their petite departments than the other department stores. Also, Banana Republic needs to realize that the petite sizes belong in all of their stores and not just online or in select stores. Why waste time going online at Banana Republic when I can go to Ann Taylor or Talbots and actually try the clothes on and see if they fit and look good before buying them. I would probably buy clothes from Banana Republic if I could go into the store and try them on. They don't realize how much money they're losing."

-Anonymous female

"I am 24 years old and I feel your pain ladies! Thank You for starting this site and petition! Everytime I can't reach something that song "I wish I was a little bit taller," plays in my head. I think if we had clothes that made us look our age, sexy, sophisticated or what ever we would but we end up in kids clothes so no wonder people "treat us like children. I am all on this bandwagon its about time that fashion is truly realistic in this country."

-Tyne, 5'0"

"Short women always seem to be perceived as the unlucky, unattractive ones. Guys (especially tall or even just average-sized ones) have these fantasies about model girlfriends. Even my own friends who are tall can't stop gushing about the benefits of height. A lot of designer jeans are made with 34" inch inseams now! So, I'd say short women receive descrimination based on their height from all fronts."

-Alix, 5'3"

"How can something so small be so off balance...."

-Monica, 4'10"

"I know I'm 'tall' but hey! I'm not stick thin (about a 10-12 AUS [completely different to US]) which is my healthy range. I think that they shouldn't be so picky about short/tall/thin/fat whatever just give everyone a chance. There is no need for discrimination. If the clothes look good on someone then let them model it!!!!!!!!!"

-Heather, 5'9" ish

"Has anyone else noticed that TV is showing fake petites in weight loss commercials? That "this is a size two!" commercial? Ever seen that? I'm size three and certainly not bigger than that woman; she's definitely not a size two. If that woman's a size two, I'm a size zero."

-Jeannette, 5'3"

"I'm going to make a new fashion line for all us petite women!"

-Jessica Ashleigh, 5'2"

"Visiting my little brother at his elementary school, I was informed by the secretary, "Excuse me, but you need a parent to sign you in." I was like...<<big smile>> 'Oh, I am actually 20 and I go to college.' She was like...oh..."

-Em, 5'0.5"

"There is definitely a hole in the market for fashion-forward styles in petite sizes. I think a designer who focused on petites only could make a killing if she knew how to market her product."

-Sarita, 4'10"

"Well, I admit that I don't really understand how the design industry works... but I wouldn't design a separate set of clothing for petites. I would design one line of clothing, and have plus sizes, regular sizes, and petite sizes--all in the same style of clothing."

-Clare, 5'0

" I love your site. Today I went shopping to fall clothes and it was most frustrating. I wish Ann Taylor Petites was in Canada because I have shopped there but travelling to the States can get expensive. Why can't retailers understand that there are short skinny petites out there as well. One lady in a major petite store told me that I was a size 2 but I corrected her and told her that I was more of a 0 or 00. She then proceeded to tell me that the store did not carry anything less than 2 and I should leave asap. I told her that I would not be back there again. Through no fault of my own, I was genetically born this way. I am not anorexic, I do not diet, I eat normally and I should at least be allowed to buy clothes that require minimal alteration (I have come to accept this as the status quo)and not look like I am 50 years old wearing polyester unless of course I choose to gain another 20 pounds just so I can at least fit into a size 2 or 4. Thank god for RW and Co, Mexx, Ricki's, Esprit or BR having size 0 or 00. At least I can least find something to wear to work there or we could just make nakedness a work uniform."

-Anonymous Female, 4'11"

"I hate being short, I have hated it my whole life. I hate that fashion magazines use the same damn body type over and over and over...6 feet bony amazons who are really not all that attractive. I've worn all sizes from a 2 to a 16 and it's been a struggle to clothe myself decently at any weight. First of all, the old lady styles of most petite lines are big turn off. Do designers think that women start out at 6 feet and then shrink into old dowagers? Don't they realize that younger, petite women want to look as stylish and professional as the Amazons? "

-Anonymous Female, 5'2"

"Thank the Lord for Talbots women's petite! I just wish Elisabeth still had local retail stores carrying petite. Without petite plus sizes, there would be no boot cut jeans or jackets that I could wear. Keep petites of all widths!"

-Anonymous

"I think it was 5'2 Rachel Leigh Cook who said 'I'm not small, I'm space-efficient.' Yeah, that about sums it up."

-Louise, 5'1"

"I recently moved to Tracy, CA, a small town and the Sears here is geared to people of all sizes!! I was forced to make my own wedding gown - I'm an extra petite, and the charge was outrageous! (not at Sears..)"

-Pamela, 4'11"

"Cliche, but dynamite comes in small packages "

"It did not occured to me that I was short until a couple years ago when my cousin (who's about five years younger than me and much, much taller) put her arm around my shoulders and proclaimed "You're so tiny!". Most people don't make comments about my height. Instead, they focus on how I have "such little feet" (6.5 isn't that litle, is it?) and my long hair (it's about 5-6 inches past my waist). Being short can be annoying at times, but a great pair of wedge heels and small step ladder make it all worth-while."

-Elizabeth, 5'2"

"I'm convinced that if I was 7 inches taller and 50 pounds thinner, i'd be the most fashionable girl in the world. Unfortunately, not only am I under 5 feet tall, I am also a size 16. Clothes are simply not made to fit me at all!! It's such a nightmare. Anything I find that is big enough for my waist is too long, and any shirts that fit are too grandma-ish, or just too long on my torso. And bras?? FORGET IT! I'm only a B cup, but with a larger band size. Safety pins and elastic are my only friends. I swear if I had the money i'd set up a shop that catered ONLY to women under 5'4" and speciaialized in larger sizes. The petite-plus departments just don't exist and it's not fair! We are just as cute and sexy as any runway model!"

-Christina, 4'11"

"I bought a jacket which, of course, was too long in the sleeves. I pinned them where I needed them hemmed and dropped it off at the dry cleaners for alterations. When I went to pick it up, it wasn't done. The tailor happened to be in, and he said that he didn't want to cut the sleeves, because he didn't think I pinned it correctly. He couldn't believe that anyone had arms that short! I tried on the jacket for him, and he realized that I had, indeed, pinned it correctly. Of course I couldn't make it out of the shop without a comment about my short arms."

-Anonymous Female, 5'1"

"I am almost 30 and I totally agree that short people are not taken as seriously as taller people. I have to work twice as hard. It's kind of irritating, but I've learned to rise above it. At 4'10, it's also very hard to shop for clothes that fit without having them altered! And that's even after buying a petite size! And my shoes are even worse! I wear a size 1 or 2 in girls, so it's hard to find stuff that's grown up looking. I've just learned to accept that I must work harder at looking great, but it sure would be nice if I didn't have to! Stores should carry a bigger, more up to date selection of petite clothing."

- Carmen, 4'10

"I'm so short I had to learn to sew my clothes, because nothing fits - but it ended up being something in my favor!! I went to buy a wedding gown. No big deal, right?? Not if you're not a 5'9" Barbie! I, however am not. I found out that I'm an EXTRA pettite, and the gown and bodice would have to be ordered separately, as a special order (do you sense a scam here??). My gown would have been $7000 dollars (instead of $3900). I told the woman not to order it - I had to think about this! When we got in the car my daughter (also my Maid of Honor-zilla) told me this was nuts you can sew - let's go to the fabric store!! I found a pattern I could use, and spent $230 dollars and ended up with a gown better than the one at the store!
HA!! If I wasn't a shortie I'da paid more for my gown than $230..."

-Pamela, 4'11"

"I teach high school kids, who passed me up height wise by the time they were in middle school. There are so many instances that my height comes into play at work. I have parents walk into my class all the time when I am sitting with the kids and ask for the teacher. I have visitors come to the building that can't believe that the students respond to me and my teaching style. I have people doubt me just because of my size!! And you know what really sucks...petite pants are still too long!!! But overall, I love being short..and the funny thing...tall men love it too!!! hahahaha. The tallest man I have dated happened to be 6'10": yes 2 feet taller then me!!! That was interesting!!!"

-Anonymous Female, 4'9

"I am trying desperately to become a runway model, but i am faced with the difficult obsticle of my height problem. My agent says I am perfect for the job except for my height of course. i take growing pills with the hope of getting discovered someday. Maybe some day I will...I can only hope."

-Anonymous Female, 5'3

"I'm not short, just vertically challenged!"

-Meredith, 4'11

"It's pointed out to me occasionally, but I think less so than others because I'm also very heavy. That of course makes clothes buying tough. I mostly wear skirts."

-Lisa, 5'2

"I have so many stories it's hard to just choose one! I think my favorite recently was when I went to Dunkin Donuts and the man behind the counter suggested that I ride a bike more often b/c my legs would stretch. I asked for a cup of coffee...not his idiotic advice !!! "

-Anonymous female, 4'7

"Don't stress about being short girls. There are many guys out there who would much prefer a petite woman over someone of taller statue. I've always liked them short. My wife is 5'1". Her father is actor Mickey Rooney, so you can see where she gets it from. I love her, she's the bomb!
Ya can't beat Petite!"

-Dave, 5'4" (Readers: Dave's pictures can be found on this site. Thanks, Dave, for sharing them with the world!)

"It's not a story or a quote...but i've been in the modelling world before, but i quit after a while because im studying for Uni etc. Anyway my dream is to become the world's first Superstar Petite Model, if not me then i hope somebody else will..."

-Helena, 5'1"

"Just Yesterday I was at my school lunch room (I'm a teacher) and a 1st grader came up to me and asked, "Are you a teacher or a big kid, because you look like a big kid." I replied that I am a teacher. Gosh, I am so sick of people thinking I am a child. I am sure if I was taller this wouldn't happen to me. "

-Erica, 4'11"

"I HATE BEING SHORT! All my friends are so much taller then me! My best friends is 5'8", but her parents are the same height as mine! How does that work? Everyone things I'm running after my big sisters all the time and I HATE IT."

-Anonymous Female, 5'0"

"The fashion world needs to get real and know that the majority of women are under 5'6". Not 5'9", 5' 10" or 6'. But what do you expect when most designers are wanna-be drag queens?"

-Sarah C. 5'5

"With a shorty, everything's within an arms reach ;)"

-Anonymous male, 5'9

"Short and sexy."

"I'm guessing these people have never seen a graceful gymnast either then? Grace and beauty is not a function of height, but rather the substance of the beholder."
